Cold sores are very common and are cased by the herpes simples virus (HSV). Groups of fluid filled blisters appear on red swollen areas of the skin or on the mucous membranes. They can be tender and painful although the do heal without scarring. Most people come into contact with the virus between the ages of three and five but do not show any symptoms until teenage years. The virus is transmitted by close contact such as kissing.
The most usual treatment is with an anti-viral cream such as Zovirax which should be used at the first sign of a cold sore, but other treatments are also available such as the Compeed Cold Sore Patch or the LipZor Light Device.
